Jarosław Jasiewicz

Short bio

Dr. Jasiewicz works in the Faculty of Geography at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. He originally specialized in the stratigraphy of glacial deposits and their deformation, but later switched to his present concentration - the application of computer science methods, such as machine vision, data mining, and search and retrieval, to problems in geoscience and archaeology. He is a contributor of computer codes to the GRASS DEV Team, and is a big fan of using C, the GRASS environment, and the R environment for the development of robust and efficient computer codes.

Scientific interests

  • Search and retrieval of landscapes (together with Space Informatics Lab team).
    This active project aims at constructing a search engine for finding similar patterns in categorical rasters. My contribution is the development of a similarity function for the land cover dataset (Jasiewicz and Stepinski 2012a and Stepinski et al., 2012c).
  • Machine vision and search and retrieval approaches in geomorphology (together with Tomasz Stepinski),
    This is my most oustanding geomorphometrical project which combine machine vision principles with geomorphometry. Paper (Stepinski and Jasiewicz 2011).
  • Data mining in geology (together with Tomasz Stepinski).
    This active project is devoted to knowledge discovery of dissection density patterns across the United States.
  • Spatial analysis in archaeology (together with Iwona Hildebrandt-Radke).
    We have developed a new method for analysis of ancient settlement preferences in lowland areas using a fuzzy apporach to show the general tendencies of this process (Jasiewicz, Hildebrandt 2009). We also have analysed broader trends in past settlement patterns using spatial point statistics (Jasiewicz and Hildebrand-Radke, 2011)
  • Computer-aided geomorphological cartography (together with Magdalena Ratajczak-Sznura).
    In this project we applied geomorphometrical features for map development (Ratajczak and Jasiewicz 2009).
  • Hydro-geomorphological analysis (Together with Markus Metz). This has been one of my biggest programming projects (Jasiewicz, Metz 2011). We produced a toolset of 10 GRASS GIS modules for hydro-geomorphological analysis. These modules parallel and extend the functionality of several popular tools such as TauDEM, JGRASS and RiverTools.
  • Fuzzy logic inference. This is a framework (written in C for GRASS GIS environment) prepared for fuzzy inference processes. No application work has been done yet (Jasiewicz 2011).
  • Geomorphometry of Poland: properties of postglacial and periglacial surface. This is my habilitation project.
  • WebGIS application (together with Michal Rzeszewski).
    This was predominantly an educational activity on my part (Rzeszewski and Jasiewicz 2009)
